My Answer

I can't remember a time when I haven't been passionately interested in reading, although of course I've had to be involved in other activities from time to time. But I always come back to books. I always need that quiet time with a favorite novel or nonfiction book. Books have such an incredible hold on me! I will always prefer them as gifts, naturally, at any time of the year!

My mom tells a story of how she was able to keep me out of trouble when I was in my "terrible twos". She would simply put me in my playpen, along with a copy of "Reader's Digest". Instead of tearing up the magazine and throwing it around the playpen, as other toddlers might do, I would quietly sit with the magazine on my lap, slowly and carefully turning the pages, looking at all the pictures with rapt attention. When I got tired of this activity, I would then fall asleep, with the magazine at my side. So my interest in books and reading began pretty early. Lol.

I take a book with me everywhere I go. If it's inconvenient to carry one, I have my ebooks on my Kindle app., on my Android phone. This is great when I go get my hair done, especially when I'm having it dyed, because I can then avoid the possibility of my book somehow getting stained with hair color. (Yes, it's happened.)

I have to read every single day, or I actually get cranky. Books are my LIFE. I need them as much as I need to eat, sleep, and carry on other life activities. For me, a day without reading is like a day without joy!

  1. Anther great post Maria,

I also feel the need to read at least a little every day. That story about Readers Digest pacifying you is as a child is wonderful.

Speaking of Readers Digest, did you actually read it when you got a little older? I remember reading it extensively as a young teen and how it sparked my interest in so many things.

    1. Hey, Brian!

      Thanks for the compliment!!

You know, I really do feel the difference on days that, for one reason or another, I can't fit in some reading. I need my reading! Lol.

I love that story, too. Of course, I don't remember this at all, but it's right in character for me. I've always been very careful with my books. In fact, I stopped lending them out because other people didn't take care of them the way I did!

Oh, yes, I used to read "Reader's Digest" years ago. I actually got a gift subscription to it from a friend once. I always found something interesting in that magazine, and of course, I loved the condensed book selections!

Thanks for the great comment!! : )

  2. That memory is wonderful! Such good care with books at a young age.. I never did magazines when I was little; but once I hit 9-10, I loved reading through them all! I would even sit there and read the things in the TV Guide hahaha.

    1. Hi, Punkiee!

Yeah, I was always very careful with any type of reading material, lol. This is why I stopped lending books years ago.

I used to read TV Guide sometimes, if I had nothing else to read around. I get antsy when I have nothing to read, so I know the feeling!

It's great that you were reading magazines at the age of 10! I'll bet it kept you out of trouble, too! Lol.

Thanks for the great comment!! : )

  3. I've been reading since I was a toddler as well, and my mom says I never tore or crumpled pages of books either. What a sweet memory!

    1. Hi, Kym!

Oh, AWESOME!! I wish we could have been playpen friends!! Lol.

Yes, this is a very sweet memory. I don't recall it myself, though. But Mom loves to tell that story!

Thanks for the great comment!! : )

  4. Uhh, I'm loving this! I'm subscribed to your blog via Bloglovin' and that's how I found out about this feature. I'm not doing one this week but maybe I'll do next one :)
Anyway, I also read every day, I just have to read at least page or two before bed. I used to take book everywhere, but since I have my nook I a taking that one with me so I usually end up reading more the one book at time.
I had a period when I wasn't reading so much, and I was going out all the time. I have some great and also bad memories from that period of my life. I like it better now. It's nice to have a calm life with few people in my life and a lot of books. :)

    1. Hi, Irena!

Oh, thanks for subscribing through Bloglovin'! I'll go do the same with your blog!

This is a very nice blog hop/book meme. I hadn't participated for quite some time, and decided to do so again. I'll be looking for your post next week!

Ditto with the page or two before bed. I really need to read at least a little every day. And I do prefer printed books, although I can see the convenience of having some ebooks on my phone.

I LOVE this statement of yours: "It's nice to have a calm life with few people in my life and a lot of books." I DEFINITELY agree!! I've always preferred to have one or two close friends, but LOTS of good books!

Thanks for the great comment!! : )

  6. I rarely go anywhere without my kindle. But I do remember that during my last years of high school, I didn't read that much... Scary times haha.

    1. Hi, Carla!

Yeah, gotta have a BOOK nearby anytime and everywhere! It's a total NECESSITY! Lol.

Maybe you didn't read that much during your last years of high school because you were having fun! That can happen. The important thing is that you're back to reading now!

Thanks for the nice comment!! : )

I always have a book with me too.

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

Glad you liked that story! I wish I could actually remember my playpen sessions with "Reader's Digest", but I don't..... Mom told me that story years ago, when I was starting to collect books with my own money.

Oh, that's a GREAT saying, as well as a funny one! I'll have to find out more by reading that series!

Thanks for the welcome back. I've been away MUCH too long! Now I'm here to stay!

Happy Hopping to you, too! Thanks for commenting back!! : )

  9. Wow! You're the first and only person I know who liked Reader's Digest at 2 years old. It's awesome that your love for reading started at such a young age. Mine didn't start until I started school and was learning how to read.
