My Thoughts About This Cover

Although this is not my usual type of read, I was totally taken in by this magnificent cover! Furthermore, even though I was never "a girly girl", I can't help but be totally captivated by the gorgeous, sumptuous dress the woman on this cover is wearing!

This novel is part of a blog tour sponsored by TLC Book Tours, and I will be posting my review of it next week. However, I decided to feature this cover today because, every time I pick up this novel (it's an ARC sent by TLC), I can't help but be taken in by just how stunningly beautiful the cover is!

That. dress. Yes, it's that dress. I know it looks dated -- after all, the story takes place at the beginning of the 1950s. Still, I would LOVE to wear that dress! It reminds me of Audrey Hepburn, she of the elfin elegance. I'm even wishing I could be Audrey Hepburn for one night, perhaps in the movie "Sabrina"....... And there I see Humphrey Bogart, smitten with me, as I glance around the room in my debutante's naivete....

POOF!! Back to reality! Lol.

This is without a doubt the quintessential women's fiction cover. All of the elements are there: elegance, sophistication, the latest fashion (at the time). And then there are the roses, those beautiful roses in different shades of pink that perfectly complement the deep red of the dress.....

The composition is perfectly balanced, too. The woman is off to the side, although she does take up a sizable part of the cover. Her figure is complemented by the roses, as well as the frame around the title, which looks like a fancy Italian restaurant menu cover, or perhaps a theater program.

The person responsible for this cover awesomeness is the brilliant Fritz Metsch, who is the Senior Designer at HarperCollins Publishers. He has over 20 years of experience in the publishing business, and is based in New York City.

Metsch has had extensive design experience with other book publishers, among them Oxford University Press, Henry Holt & Company, William Morrow, and Farrar, Straus & Giroux. He studied at Indiana University Bloomington, and School of Visual Arts in NYC.

  1. This is indeed a striking cover. The contrast between read and white is very effective.

I suppose any depiction of older fashion, that is not depicted in any way that is modern, seems dated. But I think that it is a good thing that sometimes the past is depicted in the same way that it was depicted at the time.

    Have a great weekend Maria!

    1. Hi, Brian!

Yes, indeed the contrast between the red and the white is striking. I really should have mentioned this in my post.

This dress is obviously dated, lol. But, as you state, in the context of this time period, it would of course look like the latest trend. In fact, now that you've pointed this out, I can see that the cover resembles newspaper and magazine ads of the time. Gee, I had not noticed that before!

Thanks for the insightful comment!! Hope you have a great weekend, too!! <3 :)
